STORY TIME: The previous owner of this car heard what sounded to them like engine knock. Rather than throw the car away for scrap, they made an insurance claim to USAA on the basis of hail damage(there are a half dozen very minor dings throughout the vehicle, but probably less than most 2006 BMW's) and got paid out the retail value of the car. Their insurance company did what insurance companies do with ~20 year old cars, and wrote the whole car off as a loss and sold it to me at auction. I, ALSO believing the sound I was hearing was engine knock, bought a used engine with 90k miles on it, and replaced the motor. But the engine we installed made the exact same noise! Then, on closer inspection, we realized that the A/C compressor was actually where the sound was coming from. So we replaced the A/C compressor with a new one and voila', not only does the HVAC blow cold now, but the engine runs as silently as I've ever heard. Honestly, sometimes it's hard to tell it's even running. While replacing the engine needlessly, we also replaced most of the gaskets, belts, and the clutch assembly. This car is ready to go.
